Happy Memorial Day, May 25, 2015!

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!!

This was a Memorial Day we won't forget, largely because we spent the first part of it in the Emergency Room with Timmy, with what I thought was going to be appendicitis.

We went down to Ocean City on Saturday, because Chris had a little doctor's appointment on Friday, and we were running late.   So, on Saturday, Chris dropped Anna off at the river, then went down to Ocean City to get our house open, and ready for the summer.  I followed a few hours later.    Yesterday we all went for a bike ride, then played games in the arcade (my kids love arcades...), then we went to the beach for a few hours.

The weather was really hot in Philadelphia, but along the Jersey Shore, it was really chilly and breezy.  I sat on the beach totally covered up, and reading "Fly a Little Higher" about that boy, Zach Sobiech, who died two years ago after just turning 18, and who wrote the song "Clouds" about, well, dying.   He had been diagnosed at age 14 with osteosarcoma, and was told shortly after he turned 17 that he only had 6-12 months to live.    After he received that final diagnosis, he decided to leave an impact on the world, and he wrote this amazingly beautiful song.  I cry every time I hear it.  It went to #1 on the charts, and is just lovely--about living, dying, and loving.

After we left the beach really late, there were no dinner plans, so we decided to go get pizza.  I love pizza, but we need to eat better, and I am pretty sure we had pizza on Friday night, too.   Anyway, we went to my least favorite place for pizza in Ocean City--Manco and Manco.   It used to be called Mack & Manco.  I never like going there, largely because they only took cash, the waiters (no waitresses) verbally told you what you owed them, and they gave you a look if you had the nerve to ask for a check.   Needless to say, I suspected there was something fishy going on, and sure enough, last April, the two owners were arrested for tax evasion.  The indictment against the owners alleges that for years, they "skimmed large sums of cash from the business."   Really??  Do you think they skimmed money from that all-cash business selling pizza and soda that didn't give out receipts?? Wow--that would be a shocker!!

Anyway, I usually can convince people to go to Primo Pizza, which is just a few doors down, is delicious, and they are nice people there who give you a receipt....but this time I lost.   So, we got two pizzas, and sat outside and ate them because the line to get into this place is absurd.

We biked there, but Chris decided to stay on the boardwalk and go on a few rides with Lily, so it was just me and Timmy and Matthew biking home at 9.   But, Timmy rushed home, because he didn't feel well.   He was having stomach pains, though, so I was immediately worried about appendicitis, but Chris felt him when he got home, and said Timmy's abdomen felt okay.    He fell asleep at 10, but I kept the door open so I could hear him if he had a problem during the night.

Sure enough, at 2:00 am, I heard Timmy calling for me.  I jumped up, ran to him, and I have never seen him so sick.  He was in unbelievable pain, was throwing up, and sweating profusely.  I got Chris up, put on Timmy's shoes, and they went to the ER--he was really bad.  I didn't sleep at all, because I had just read that book, and of course I was thinking the worse...but Timmy was home at 7, with a little bandaid where the IV had gone in (I can't imagine he handled that well!), and a diagnosis of...well, just kind of like a stomach bug.  I am still not sure....I told him to let me know if anything hurts him at all over the next month....I have heard about appendicitis attacks that come and go.

Anyway, I didn't sleep, Chris and Timmy obviously didn't sleep, and so the first part of the day was us just trying to get the sleep we missed.   I also got Anna from her friend's house in Avalon, and that took me two hours, but I really wanted her to be on the beach with her siblings today.   So, this was a quiet Memorial Day....but a "memorable" one for Timmy and the rest of us, as well!
