Practicing their pre-race strategy of running with their hands frozen in the air and legs crooked....
Practicing the baton pass...although this wasn't a baton race...
Just happy to be with each other...and Timmy's eyes are always closed...this looks the least obvious!!
Every year we do the June Fete Fair 5K for a few reasons. One, it benefits this organization called Safe Harbor, which helps families going through the loss of a loved one from cancer. Second, a group from my neighborhood started doing the walk when I was pregnant with Anna, and I was 7 months pregnant walking with them, and it was fun.
Now I do the 5K race with my kids. I started running it around 3 years ago, and my time the first year was around 39 mins....just barely above a fast walk, but I was aiming for anything less than 45 mins, which is what I could walk it in. Last year, I got 37 mins, 41 seconds....but I didn't stop to walk at all, and I was pretty happy. They changed the course, and the first 1.25 miles is all uphill--steep and hilly. It is really terrible.
This year, I started running, and immediately decided this is it for me..., I will never do this again without walking up this hill, but I hadn't decided I could walk, so I had to run. Within minutes, I thought I was having a hallucination....I felt like my head had a ball of fire around it, and I was huffing terribly. I just kept on thinking, honestly, about Beau Biden. That poor man died last night with two small children at a young age....I could run three miles after what he had been through.
Happily, I never stopped to walk. Sadly, and oddly, there were lots of people in front of me who did stop to walk, but who still beat me.....not sure how that works. Anyway, when I finished the last 500 yards (which is also uphill), I saw the clock, which I think said 34 minutes, something, but I couldn't really see through the sweat and the hallucinations. Then I saw Timmy and Anna, who said some words of encouragement...and then Anna said "Mommy, you won a gift card." They raffle off gift cards, which that little piece of news got me going I started thinking how cool it would be to beat 35 minutes...but I crossed at exactly 35 mins, 01 seconds. All in all, I am thrilled...I didn't stop, and I got over 2.5 minutes faster than the last time.
I usually run only on the treadmill, and outside running is soooo much harder. I really admire those people I see out running. I may be in a lot of pain tomorrow, but for now, I feel great!!
I write about my wonderful family and whatever else I want my children to remember about our family!

Lily's Ballet Recital--Metropolitan Ballet May 30, 31st, 2015
This weekend is Lily's ballet recital at Metropolitan Ballet Company. It is one of the best ballet schools around Philadelphia, and the recital is intense....practice on Wednesday, a four hour dress rehearsal on Thursday, another on Friday, and then two performances on Saturday and Sunday. She was so good....really looks like a ballerina in the making!
These are from the Sunday 4 pm performance...the whole family came to see her--except Jack, of course!
We have been taking post-recital photos on these stairs since they were realllllllly little....this is the first one without Jack. I missed him.
This is a great picture of everyone.

I simply cannot believe how big my face is...and how wide I am. I know I am not supposed to say that, but I just did. I am looking into getting Kybella, which is that new fat burning injection that is going to be approved by the FDA in June. I saw something on the Today show about how it fixes fat necks, double chins....everything I have!
Anyway, Lily was great. She had a special part in the Three Wishes, where she runs out and tries to convince the husband to buy riches from her. Honestly, I do think she was really good, and my friend, Meg, said she "stole the show." Which I don't think she did, but she was really good. Best part for me...no ballet until September!

Happy Memorial Day, May 25, 2015!
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!!
This was a Memorial Day we won't forget, largely because we spent the first part of it in the Emergency Room with Timmy, with what I thought was going to be appendicitis.
We went down to Ocean City on Saturday, because Chris had a little doctor's appointment on Friday, and we were running late. So, on Saturday, Chris dropped Anna off at the river, then went down to Ocean City to get our house open, and ready for the summer. I followed a few hours later. Yesterday we all went for a bike ride, then played games in the arcade (my kids love arcades...), then we went to the beach for a few hours.
The weather was really hot in Philadelphia, but along the Jersey Shore, it was really chilly and breezy. I sat on the beach totally covered up, and reading "Fly a Little Higher" about that boy, Zach Sobiech, who died two years ago after just turning 18, and who wrote the song "Clouds" about, well, dying. He had been diagnosed at age 14 with osteosarcoma, and was told shortly after he turned 17 that he only had 6-12 months to live. After he received that final diagnosis, he decided to leave an impact on the world, and he wrote this amazingly beautiful song. I cry every time I hear it. It went to #1 on the charts, and is just lovely--about living, dying, and loving.
After we left the beach really late, there were no dinner plans, so we decided to go get pizza. I love pizza, but we need to eat better, and I am pretty sure we had pizza on Friday night, too. Anyway, we went to my least favorite place for pizza in Ocean City--Manco and Manco. It used to be called Mack & Manco. I never like going there, largely because they only took cash, the waiters (no waitresses) verbally told you what you owed them, and they gave you a look if you had the nerve to ask for a check. Needless to say, I suspected there was something fishy going on, and sure enough, last April, the two owners were arrested for tax evasion. The indictment against the owners alleges that for years, they "skimmed large sums of cash from the business." Really?? Do you think they skimmed money from that all-cash business selling pizza and soda that didn't give out receipts?? Wow--that would be a shocker!!
Anyway, I usually can convince people to go to Primo Pizza, which is just a few doors down, is delicious, and they are nice people there who give you a receipt....but this time I lost. So, we got two pizzas, and sat outside and ate them because the line to get into this place is absurd.
We biked there, but Chris decided to stay on the boardwalk and go on a few rides with Lily, so it was just me and Timmy and Matthew biking home at 9. But, Timmy rushed home, because he didn't feel well. He was having stomach pains, though, so I was immediately worried about appendicitis, but Chris felt him when he got home, and said Timmy's abdomen felt okay. He fell asleep at 10, but I kept the door open so I could hear him if he had a problem during the night.
Sure enough, at 2:00 am, I heard Timmy calling for me. I jumped up, ran to him, and I have never seen him so sick. He was in unbelievable pain, was throwing up, and sweating profusely. I got Chris up, put on Timmy's shoes, and they went to the ER--he was really bad. I didn't sleep at all, because I had just read that book, and of course I was thinking the worse...but Timmy was home at 7, with a little bandaid where the IV had gone in (I can't imagine he handled that well!), and a diagnosis of...well, just kind of like a stomach bug. I am still not sure....I told him to let me know if anything hurts him at all over the next month....I have heard about appendicitis attacks that come and go.
Anyway, I didn't sleep, Chris and Timmy obviously didn't sleep, and so the first part of the day was us just trying to get the sleep we missed. I also got Anna from her friend's house in Avalon, and that took me two hours, but I really wanted her to be on the beach with her siblings today. So, this was a quiet Memorial Day....but a "memorable" one for Timmy and the rest of us, as well!

Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale--Oaks, PA--June 4, 5, and 6th, 2015--How to Prepare and Shop!
I got my postcard from Lilly Pulitzer over the weekend inviting me to the Warehouse Sale held on June 4-6th, 2015 in Oaks, PA (outside of Philadelphia!!) In less than 14 days or so, the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale is coming to Oaks, PA in the Convention Center. I really am so excited. This is one of the easiest and best ways to get Lilly Pulitzer items at amazing prices....even if you missed the Target fiasco a few weeks ago!! In fact, you will be happy you missed all those things at Target--this is much better stuff!
If you didn't get the invitation, don't worry...they let you fill out a card with your information on it at the front. But, there are some things to do in advance:
1) Prepare mentally. This isn't for the weak of heart. If this kind of thing isn't your thing, then fine...as my father would say, "that leaves me more." Don't forget...this is a marathon, not a sprint (kind of). You are in this for the long haul. The sale itself is several days long. If you live near Philadelphia, you should plan on going on Wednesday (when depends on you...see below). Then, if you decide you need to venture out again, you can go again on either Friday or Saturday when the crowds have calmed down, and you really can see what is there.
2) Anticipate the year's needs for events (clothes) and important upcoming dates (for gifts), and make a list. The year before my daughter's friends all started turning 16, I was told by my friend, Marybeth, that she had always used the Lilly warehouse sale to get lots of Sweet 16 gifts. I listened---I got all kinds of Lilly gift-type items...and I was so glad I did. When my daughter got invited to a party, I was able to go with her to the bin of Lilly gifts we keep, and pick out a $100 Lilly necklace or scarf that I only paid $20-$30 for--and the girls always raved about how much they loved their Lilly present! So, think about teacher's gifts, gifts for friends (40th birthdays, retirements, bridal showers??)
3) Don't out-psyche yourself. I did this one year, and I didn't get anything. Literally nothing. After waiting for several hours (which is fun, actually), I finally got in, and what did I do? I wandered around aimlessly, just in awe of all the stuff, all the people, all the deals. I couldn't focus. This is before I made lists, so I couldn't remember who/what I was supposed to get. My friends got stuff, and wanted to leave, so I just left.
5) Make a list a what you want, and for whom (so you remember what you need to get as described in #3, and so you don't make the mistake in #4.) This might sound obvious, but I just started doing this, and it makes shopping so much easier. I put down names and sizes, and keep it on a piece of paper in my pocket. That way, I can pull it out near the end of my shopping time, and remember that I want to pick up something for Ellie for graduation next year...
6) Check out your closet. Consider what things you need.
7) Get a babysitter. I have 5 children, and I would never consider bringing any of them under the age of 13 with me to this sale. They will anchor you down, and you don't want to be anchored down. I know that I can't concentrate with an unhappy child nearby, so at $10 an hour for 5 hours, it is worth it to spend $50 to go without your children. The money you save getting good bargains will make the babysitting expense seem like a bargain.
8) Decide on your shopping strategy. Specifically:
Are you going to camp out days in advance? Personally, I would not do this, but this is a decision lots of people think is fine. I think these ladies do get a ton of samples (which is the thing I assume these ladies want to get), but it would not be worth it to me to spend 36 hours outside in the elements (heat, rain, sun) in order to get a good deal on Lilly clothing. I think these people are just going for the samples, which are typically priced between $15 for skirts to $50 for dresses. I think there are other avenues to buy these items at a great price (read, eBay, re-Lilly, etc). Still, if you are really hard core, this is the strategy for you. I met one of these ladies one time, and she told me she and some friends drove in from Ohio every year, and camped out from Monday through Thursday morning. She said they did get a hotel room nearby, and took off the whole week from work. If I factor in the cost of the hotel and the food for those days...it just isn't worth it to me.
Are you going to go early on Thursday and hang out in the early morning hours, like from 4-7 am? This is not a bad strategy...I have done this at the old King of Prussia site, and it is actually kind of fun. Depends on your personality. I got up one time at 2, got in line at 3, and was in the place at 7. I got some samples, and left at 10...but I was exhausted by 1 in the afternoon. The new site has a tent for the line, so you will be covered at one point, and the line inside is really long (so, don't get too excited once you get to the door.....you still have at least an hour wait until you make it to the entrance of the sale!)
Or, are you going to avoid the rush, and show up at 3 pm on Thursday? The sale goes until 8 pm on Thursday. I think there is some good reasons to pursue this method. First, all the local moms have to be home to get the kids off the bus, etc. by around 3, and they will be leaving at around that time. Second, you might get the second shot of samples that have been shunned by the first round of shoppers. I have never been inside at 5 am, but I have spoken to other people who tell me that women run over to the samples, and just shove piles and piles of samples into big pink bags. These people/women apparently shop for 2 hours, then take four hours to go through their stuff...and then start discarding/putting back the stuff they don't want. This stuff is usually put back on the floor several hours later, so missing the first wave of people doesn't mean you won't get any samples. I think these sample items may go back on the floor around 4 pm on Thursday.
Or, you might decide just not to go at all on Thursday, and show up for Friday, or even Saturday? If you adopt this latter strategy, you should know that the samples will likely be all gone. Still, there will be lots of dresses, and pants, and skirts up to 70% off...just not 90% off like on the samples. The first time I went to the sale, I showed up on Saturday afternoon, and I still got lots of nice things for a very good price.
Day of Sale:
9) Eat well. There is really nothing to eat at the Oaks Convention Center, except for one small vending machine that is always empty immediately. There is a Target a mile away, and some other places, but you don't want to leave the facility just to eat. Bring some nuts with you. You might be there for hours.
10) I don't try on clothes (long story), but if you do, you should know that the dressing area is a large black curtained-off area that fits about 100 people changing at a time, and you might wait in line for up to 45 mins (it gets crazy!) If you are modest, get over it, and wear some easy to pull on garments so that you can get changed easily.
At the Sale:
11) Head to the Samples first. They are in the back, near the dressing room. In the old days, there were lots there. Not so much anymore after the first day...the sale has gotten too big.
12) Take what you like as soon as you see it--consider prices later. Your ideas of what are good prices will change, and because you don't know what items are there in the first 30 minutes, take what you like. If you decide you don't want it, you can always politely put it back on one of the many racks you will see for that purpose. You might think $59 for a dress is a lot, but remember...these dresses have retail prices of up to $300. That $59 is a good deal. Same for kids' clothes. Every year I am amazed by how you can get girl's bathing suits for $24. The same bathing suit at Gap costs $38. These Lilly clothes wear well, and you can always give them as gifts if you decide you don't want it for yourself.
13) Consider the non-seasonal items...like sweaters, jackets, coats. One year, I had a black fleece Maddie Jacket in my bag for hours, and eventually I decided I didn't need it. When I got to the register, however, I noticed that it was a Sample, and cost only $40. But it was a black fleece jacket, and it was early June, and it was 90 degrees out. I didn't need a black fleece jacket. Well, I got it, just because it was only $40. And sure enough, in about three months, I needed that black fleece jacket, and I have worn it for the last four years for 6-8 months a year. It was definitely a great buy.
So, if they have sweaters, don't pass them over...look at them. One year they had mounds of cashmere sweaters that seemed untouched. When I asked my friends, they said "Oh, we don't need them now." I went and looked, and got several great sweaters for less than I would have paid at Gap for a cotton sweater. So, if they have black pants...look at them, even if they aren't brightly colored. You might not wear them on June 15th, but you will wear them from November 15th through March 30th where I live.
Have fun, and remember, this is a serious business that now only happens once a year. Up until two years ago, this sale was held every November and every June, so if you missed June, you could still come back for November deals....now you would have to wait another 12 months....don't blow this! It isn't for the weak-hearted, and you can't give in to the temptation to slack off!
If you didn't get the invitation, don't worry...they let you fill out a card with your information on it at the front. But, there are some things to do in advance:

Goodbye Jack! Jack leaves for a summer program in Rome!! May 18, 2015
Jack and I piled his one piece of luggage and one carry-on into my van, and headed up to JFK Airport today. We made great time...I literally just dropped him off, then turned around and headed home. It was an international flight, obviously, and I couldn't really wait for him...and I didn't want to get stuck in rush hour New York traffic. I was home by 5.
I am so excited for him....what an amazing opportunity. He is studying with a Notre Dame program--he is taking two core Engineering classes, which is great for him. I am shocked that he takes 5 classes each semester. We never took more than 4 each semester at Bucknell. This program is intense, but it has about 75 students in it, and they plan fun excursions for weekends....which is good if he doesn't have to do the planning.
He will be missed around here...but I couldn't be more excited...how often do you get a chance to live in Rome, take classes, and just enjoy your summer??

YIppee!! Only 21 Days until the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale!!
I am so excited! I will do a more complete blog in a few days, but for now, you should be going through your closet, and donating any old clothes that you don't wear to make room for the Lilly Pulitzer clothes you will wear that you purchase at the Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale in Oaks, PA held June 4-6, 2015! It is so great!
If you like Lilly, you will love this sale and should plan on getting there early on June 4th (some people start camping out the Sunday before--I think that is a little too hard core for me!!) If you don't know Lilly, or think it isn't for you, then you should plan on going on either June 5th or Saturday, June 6th, when the lines are mostly gone, and see what all the fuss is about!

Happy Mother's Day--May 10, 2015!
Happy Mother's Day to all!! Honestly, my Mother's Day started last night, when Jack got home from Notre Dame...I drove down to see him, and we stopped at Geno's for a cheese steak. So nice to be able to spend time with him before he leaves for Rome next weekend.
This morning, I got up early to go to the gym. I was leaving class, and I looked up, and Anna came to surprise me--we walked on the treadmill for a few minutes, which was also nice...something we never do. When I got home, I found that she had made me a delicious pancake (it was 2 inches thick, and made of flaxseed and chia seeds with coconut oil...yay!!). And I got lots of flowers that were picked up at flower sales....a nice arrangement for my beds and planters!!
All day, we cleaned out the third floor, so we decided to cancel our reservations to go out to the William Penn Inn for brunch. It is an amazing place for brunch, but we got stuff done, and Anna had to go to Crew by 2:45 (nice of them to let the team have a later practice...!!)
Lily and I went to the pool to swim at 3, then when we got home, we got more stuff done, which we really need to do.
Tonight was my Art Show. I have been taking Art lessons on Tuesdays, and tonight was the show. It was really nice. My children were all very impressed by my one piece of painting work:

Although they had no problem laughing at my Scotch tape!! All in all, a lovely Mother's Day...but every day is a lovely mom's day when you have five amazing children!!

Lily's First Holy Communion--May 9, 2015!
Today was Lily's First Holy Communion. To say we have planned for this day for years would not be an exaggeration! We got her dress about 3 years ago. We were out one day, and she saw a dress she loved, and she begged me for it. I always thought she would wear Anna's dress, but I told her that if she really wanted THAT dress, I would get it, but she had to wear it. She said yes, and she did!!
I did the General Intercessions, which I have to say is the first time I have ever done them. I was a little nervous about knowing when to go up, and sure enough, they skipped the Profession of Faith that was my cue to go up...so I was sitting there for a few second before the guy in front of me told me to go. I managed okay.
After the Communion, Lily went up and did a reading that she and I practiced for weeks--she looked gorgeous!
Here are some more photos:
Afterwards, we went to Iron Hill Brewery in Chestnut Hill, which is our new go-to celebration place.
I took a long drive home, but when we got home, it sort of seemed a little un-finished. Kind of like Christmas morning when you wake up and it all seems done. Here she was in her dress, all gorgeous, but the party for her isn't until July (lots of long reasons!). Anyway, she and I went for a walk, and talked about how great the day had been, and I think she was happy. We will be having her party in July....Jack is getting home tonight, and we didn't want to rush it before he leaves for Rome next Sunday. Congratulations Lily!!

Happy 13th Birthday to Matthew--Matthew's Birth Story-May 7, 2002
Matthew turns 13 today...a teenager. I don't want to make too much about the teenager thing, because it is bumming him out a little. I think he wishes he could be 12 forever!!
Matthew's birth story is definitely my most interesting....if you like trauma.
Some photos of Matthew through the years....
This is one of my favorite photos, which I just ruined. Running down the side of his face was some gook, and I thought I would rub it off with some water...and I rubbed off his face. I am not happy...What you can't see is that in front of him was a duckling that he was supposed to be holding, but he wouldn't hold it...that is terror in his eyes!!
My Lord, does he love Timmy, and Timmy is always there for Matthew.
Matthew at 6...he wore those Merrills for 3 years. They were an ugly green. He wore them everywhere. To the gym, to the beach. Everywhere!!
Today...May 7, 2015. I made him wait while I took a picture of him. I almost didn't, because we are getting his hair cut tonight....it is so long! My Mother's Day gift from Chris is he is going to fix that flag post...that is so sad the way it is leaning down, broken!!

Happy Birthday, Matthew...by far my most devoted son!! I will live with Matthew when I am 90--he is the only one who will take me, probably!

While I am on the subject of Lilly Pulitzer for Target....
So, I was at Target last night making a return, and the girl told me that it was the first return she had done all day that wasn't Lilly Pulitzer, because the 14 day return period ended yesterday. So, I asked her if she had any returns I could look at. She showed me what was there, and I ended up buying Lily two really cute bathing suits for $16 each, and one for Anna for $28, I think, which is cheaper than what Target usually sells their regular bathing suits for.
Anyway, it might be worth it to go to your Target to check it out. You might find some good returns.

Mother's Day gift...a new Fitbit at Dick's!
In case you are looking for a great Mother's Day gift, Dick's Sporting Good has Fitbits on sale this week for $50 off...for $79.98 (I think). I got one from Chris for Christmas, although it took over two months to set it up. I absolutely love my Fitbit..it tracks all kind of things, like how well you actually sleep, how many steps you take, and how "active" you really are. I am obsessed with checking out my progress. I hesitated to get one because of the expense, but it was a great Christmas gift. The pink one in the Dick's ad is the one I have.
I did some research when I first started wearing it, and I found out that you can hook up your Fitbit to various rewards programs. I just googled "Fitbit reward programs." I don't really do any of them, except for the one I set up with Walgreens. I don't shop at Walgreens, but there is one close to me. So, if set your Fitbit up with Walgreens' Balance Rewards, you get a certain amount of Balance Rewards for how many steps you take. There are all kinds of limitations, but for about 3 minutes of time to set it up, I will get Balance rewards that will get me about $5 every 4 months just for wearing my Fitbit. Obviously, I am not going to Aruba with that money, but it will get me $15 worth of milk at Walgreens at some point near the end of the year. Not too bad.
